Abstract

Key word : Effectiveness, Numbered Heads Together, Reading, experimental. The purpose of this thesis is: (1) to know the implementation of Numbered Heads Together to teach reading at the Eight grade of MTsN Filial Pulutan to the students in academic year 2013/2014; (2) To know which one is more effective between Numbered Heads Together and Direct Instruction for teaching reading at the Eight grade of MTsN Filial Pulutan to the students in academic year 2013/2014. The design of the research used in Quasi-Experimental Design with Pretestposttest and control Group. While collecting the data, the reseacher uses a test with multiple choice types. The data are then analyzed by using t test formula to analyze the experiment and control group. The population in this research is the eight grade students of MTsN Filial Pulutan Nogosari Boyolali. The total number of population is 134 students coming from four classes. The sampling of the research is cluster random sampling and two classes were taken randomly as the sample. The samples are class VIII A as the experiment class consist of 32 students and VIII B as the control class as 32 students. Research uses t test, normality test, and homogeneity test to check the two groups have the same ability, homogeneity, and normal distribution or not. An then, after analyzing the pre test data the researcher finds that both groups are homogenous and in normal distribution. It can be seen that the  2 (0.429) is lower than t at the level of significant () 5% = 3.841. So  2 <t (0.429 < 3.841) and the data are homogeneous. The result of t test computation shows that t > ttable (7.495 > 2.000) for level significance 0. 05, so HO is not accepted. Moreoverthe alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted while Null Hypothesis (H0) is rejected. It means there is difference reading ability between experiment and control class. It means the result is: There is a significant difference in students’ reading ability between the students taught using Numbered Heads Together and those taught using Direct Instruction. The students taught using Numbered Heads Together (78.813) have higher scores than those taught using Direct Instruction (69.406). Thus, the result of the research study implies that Numbered Heads Together is effective to be applied in teaching reading.
