The Effectiveness of Using VOA Learning English in TeachingSpeaking (An Experimental Research at the Tenth Grade Students of SMK Batur Jaya 2Ceper in the Academic Year 2017/2018)Advisor : Arina Rohmatika, S.Pd., M.Pd.Key words: Experimental Research, Teaching Speaking, VOA Video, The Tenth GradeStudentsThe study is aimed at finding out whether there is a significant difference in the speaking achievement between the tenth grade students of SMK Batur Jaya 2 Ceper in the academic year 2017/2018 who were taught by using VOA video and those who wereused text book. The researcher chose disaster, accident, earthquake as the topics of recount text in teaching experimental group. Beside that the teacher chose unforgettablemoment and holiday as the topics recount text in teaching control group. This research was classified as a quasi-experimental study pre-test post-testgroup design. The population was the tenth grade students of SMK Batur Jaya 2 Ceper it involved 156 students from the different majors. In taking the sample, the researcherused proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The sample of the researchwas the tenth grade students of X AK (23) as the experimental group and X AP (33) asthe control group. The researcher taught the experimental group for four meetings by using VOAvideo at the first meeting the topic was about accident, disaster, earth quake and the last meeting, the topic was about vacation. Even though the control group was taught usingthe textbook by the teacher, the first meeting, the topic was about holiday, visits myuncle house and the last meeting, the topic was about unforgettable moment. Theresearcher conducted the speaking test orally from recount text. The researcher used inter-rater to take the students’ speaking score. First evaluator was researcher(X AK)and second evaluator was English teacher (X AP) of SMK Batur Jaya 2 Ceper. The evaluator used assessment criteria suggested by David P. Harris which provides ratingscale for five criteria of the elements of speaking skill. The criteria are pronunciation,grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The data analysis in this researchused independent T-test. The result of analysis independent T-test is higher than T-table (4.226 > 1.6736)on the significance level with df = 54 is 1.6736 and the mean scores of two groups showed that the experimental group has higher mean score than the control group. Themean experiment group who are taught by using VOA video (76.08) is higher than the mean control group those who were taught by using text book (72.36). it means thatVOA video is effective media to teach speaking to the tenth grade students of SMK Batur Jaya 2 Ceper in the academic year of 2017/2018.
