The aim’s of this study are to know: (1) the emotional quotient of the eleventh grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Karanganyar in the Academic Year 0f 2017/2018, (2) to know the writing ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Karanganyar in the Academic Year 0f 2017/2018, and (3) to know the correlation between emotional quotient and writing ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Karanganyar in the Academic Year of 2017/2018. This study was carried out in March up to April 2018 at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Karanganyar. The method which used in this study was correlational method. The sample was 86 students which were taken by multi stage random sampling technique. The class chosen is XI IPA 3 and XI IPA 4. The instruments in collecting the data were questionnaire and test. The questionnaire was used to collect the data of student’s emotional quotient; while the test was used to collect the data of student’s writing ability. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment Formula. The results of the study are: (1) The average score of student’s response of self awareness, self management, motivation, empathy, and socail relationship management is about 147 or 73,50%. (2) the average score of students writing ability is about 69,88. (3) the result of the study shows that there is a positive correlation between student’s emotional quotient and student’s writing ability because the coefficient of correlation r-obtained is higher than r-table (0,682 > 0,210) for level significance 0,05. Regarding the result of this research, it can be concluded that student’s emotional quotient have a positive correlation with student’s writing ability. Therefore, students emotional quotient should be considered in increasing student’s writing ability although student’s writing ability doesn’t completely depend on student’s emotional quotient variable.
