Abstract

Students’ Information Literacy on Speech of Extracurricular Program in Muhammadiyah Boarding School Klaten at Eighth Grade of MTs M 1 Klaten in 2017/2018 Academic Year. Thesis. English Education Department, Islamic Education and Teacher Training Faculty, The State Islamic Institute of Surakarta. Advisor : Dr. Imroatus Solikhah, M.Pd Key words : Information Literacy, Speech, Extracurricular Program. Speech is one of compulsory extracurricular program for the eighth grade students of MTs in MBS Klaten. To deliver speech properly the students need information from various sources as a material to make speech text, so that their speech deliveries are guided. The students should able to identify, find, evaluate, arrange, create, use and communicate the information to the audiences. As stated by Bruce (2003: 3) that information literacy is ability to access, evaluate, organize and use information in order to learn in formal and informal learning context. The aims of this research were (1) explore the implementation of speech on Extracurricular Program in MBS Klaten at eighth grade of MTs, (2) explore the students‟ information literacy on Speech of Extracurricular Program in MBS Klaten at eighth grade of MTs and (3) explore the students‟ speech competency on Extracurricular Program in MBS Klaten at eighth grade of MTs. The researcher uses descriptive method with qualitative approach. The participants of the research were the 8th grade students of MTs in MBS Klaten that consist of 30 students. The researcher collected data from observation, interview, documentation and questionnaire. The researcher explains about the implementation of speech on extracurricular program, students‟ speech text, genre and method that used. Then the researcher explains about the students‟ information literacy and the students‟ speech competency. The result findings showed that: first, the implementation of speech on extracurricular program in line with the ideal implementation of extracurricular activity according to Guidelines on Extra-curricular Activities in School 2012. The students‟ steps in writing speech are: formulate the title, determine the purpose and developing the discussion. The speech genres used by the students were informative and persuasive. And the speech method used was memorize method. Second, the components of information literacy were library literacy, visual literacy and media literacy. And the students have competencies to identify, explore, select, organize, create, present, assess and apply the information. Third, from the students‟ speech practice it found that the students‟ speech competency was in the good category.
