Abstract

Abstract The aim of research is to determine: 1). The state of the quality of teachers at SMK Muhammadiyah 5 Karanganyar. 2). The principal strategy for improving the quality of teachers at SMK Muhammadiyah 5 Karanganyar. 3). The principal obstacle in improving the quality of teachers at SMK Muhammadiyah 5 Karanganyar. This study used a qualitative descriptive method. The study was conducted at SMK Muhammadiyah 5 Karanganyar in February until April 2015. The subjects were principals and teachers. The informants were the vice principal, teachers and school committees. The techniques of data collection used methods: interview, observation and documentation. The data validity checking used the method of triangulation of methods and sources. Data analysis techniques used interactive model comprises; data collection, data reduction, data presentation and conclusion. The results of the reserch are: 1). The state of the quality of teachers at SMK Muhammadiyah 5 Karanganyar is based on academic qualifications shown in 2015, 80% (28 people) have met the qualification standards of S1 and 20% (4 people) is being in the period of study. In the teaching process,the teachers carry out their duties in accordance with its competence. 2). The strategies of principal at SMK Muhammadiyah 5 Karanganyar include: a). The formulation strategy to improve the quality of teachers' is by planning based on the vision, mission, and goals of the school. b). The implementation strategy is by involving the teachers in scientific forums (seminars, training, wokshop), further studies, revitalization of MGMP, welfare, providing of supporting facilities for teacher performance. c). The evaluation strategy is by conducting evaluations of teacher quality improvement such as the presence of teachers, teacher performance, achievement and progress of students. 3). The principal obstacle to improve the quality of teachers is the less awareness of teachers. Moreover, the solution is done with communication and campaign quality culture.
