Abstract

Key words : Correlation, Conscientiousness, Vocabulary Mastery, Writing Skill The thesis is aimed in finding the correlation between (1) conscientiousness and writing skill; (2) vocabulary mastery and writing skill; (3) conscientiousness, vocabulary mastery and writing skill among the eleventh grade boarding school students MAN Surakarta 1 in the academic year 2017/2018. This study is a correlation study. There are three variables in this study, studentsâ€™ conscientiousness as the independent variable (X1), vocabulary mastery as the independent variable (X2) and writing skill as dependent variable (Y). This study was carried out in April up to May 2018 at MAN Surakarta 1. The population was all of the eleventh grade boarding school students of MAN Surakarta 1 which consist of three classes from XI IPA 1, XI IPA 2, and XI IPA 3. The total number of the students was 68 students. The sample was 68 students which were taken by population sampling technique. The instruments in collecting the data were questionnaire and test. The questionnaire was used to collect the data of conscientiousness, while the test was used to collect the data of vocabulary mastery and writing skill. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Person Product Moment formula to find the coefficient correlation and simple linear regression to find the significance and linearity of the variable. The result of the research are (1) there is positive correlation between conscientiousness (X1) and their writing skill (Y) because the coefficient of correlation rx1y is higher than rtable (0.392 > 0.244). It means that 15.3% variance of writing skill (Y) is influenced by conscientiousness (X1) ; (2) there is positive correlation between vocabulary mastery (X2) and their writing skill (Y) because the coefficient of correlation rx2y is higher than rtable (0.620 > 0.244). It means that 15.3% variance of writing skill (Y) is influenced by vocabulary mastery (X2); (2) ther conscientiousness (X1), vocabulary mastery (X2) and writing skill (Y) because the coefficient of correlation rx1x2y is higher than rtable (0.621 > 0.244). It means that 15.3% variance of writing skill (Y) is influenced by conscientiousness (X1) and vocabulary mastery (X2), while 61.5% the other is contributed by other factors.
