Abstract

Key words : Directive Speech Acts, Pragmatic, Qualitative Analysis, English teaching The objectives of this research are 1) to identity the types of directive speech acts in English Teaching Learning Process at SMP Al Islam 1 Surakarta in Academic Year 2016/2017, 2) To identify the realization of Speech Acts based on the way to convey (Direct and Indirect Speech Acts) used by the English teachers in English learning process at SMP Al Islam 1 Surakarta in Academic Year 2016/2017. This research was designed as a descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research were two English teachers. The data was collected from the observation. The data were in the form of scripts of English teacher’s utterances in the classroom which contained directive speech acts. The data of directive speech acts were analysed by reducing the the data, presenting the data, analysing the data by using Searle’s and Yule’s theory and taking the conclusion and verification. The data of types speech acts based on the way to convey were analysed by reducing the data, presenting the data, analysing the data by using Wijana’s theory and taking the conclusion and verification. the researcher used theoretical triangulation. The researcher compared the data of this research to the related theory. The researcher checked the data of speaker utterances based on the directive speech acts theory of Searle and Yule and speech acts based on the way to convey of Wijana. The result of this research showed that from 130 teacher’s directive utterances, 3 of them were identified as ordering, 98 as commanding, 2 as requesting, 18 as advising, and 14 as recommending. It meant that 2.3% of them were commanding, 75,3% commanding, 1,5% requesting, 10% advising, and 10,7% recommending. Teachers used two types of speech acts based on the way to convey in uttering her directive. They were direct and indirect speech acts. From the total number of 130 teacher’s directive utterances, 102 of them are direct speech acts and 28 of them are indirect speech acts. It meant that 78,4% of them were direct speech acts, and 21,5% were indirect speech acts. It can be concluded that 1) English teachers of SMP Al Islam 1 Surakarta used five from five types of directive speech acts based on Searle and Yule’s theory, namely ordering, commanding, requesting, advising, and recommending. Commanding dominated the use of directive speech acts with represent 75,3%. The English teachers of SMP Al Islam 1 Surakarta often used commanding utterances to ask their students to do something and the context was teaching process in the classroom, it means that the English teachers like used commanding utterances when asked their x students doing something in learning process. 2) The English teachers used two types of speech acts based on the way to convey based on Wijana’s theory, namely direct and indirect speech acts. Direct speech acts was dominant which represent 78,4%. It means that the teachers like used imperative sentences to ask their students to do something. The English teachers often used direct commanding utterances in learning process. Meanwhile, the purpose of the use of commanding utterance is to give instructions to students doing something when learning process in the classroom. The researcher has suggestion for forthcoming research to analyze types of speech act based on assertive, commisive, declarative, and expressive.
