Abstract

Abstract The aims of this study are to describe the students’ ability in identifying genre in some written texts and to describe the students’ ability in using genre features in writing a certain genre. The data are the students’ writings of 50 respondents of the fifth semester English students of English Education IAIN Surakarta. They are taken by making objective test and essay test. They are analyzed by tabulating the tests based on the schematic structure and lexicogrammatical, counting the percentage of students’ ability in identifying each genre, identifying their weaknesses, and interpreting the result. It is concluded that basically they are able to identify genre in some different texts, namely genre of spoof, recount, descriptive, analytical exposition, and explanation. Based on the low percentage of their writing result in genre narrative, their weaknesses in schematic structures rely on the complication and resolution and based on lexicogrammatical result, they are weak in using the individual participant and time connection.
