Abstract

Nurlitasari. 2018. A Critical Discourse Analysis of Student’s Bullying Found in Thirteen Reasons Why Novel Written by Jay Asher and The Implication in Teaching. Thesis: English Education Department, Islamic Education and Teacher Training Faculty. Advisor : Dr. Imroatus Solikhah, M.Pd. Key words : CDA, Bullying, Thirteen Reasons Why Bullying is a negative acts is done by someone who has purpose to hurt and to intimidate someone by certain level can caused a traumatic or tragically death in real life or fiction. Through this research, the researcher wants to disclose about bullying act found in novel. The aims of this research are: (1) To describe the types and the levels of bullying that found in Thirteen Reasons Why Novel by Asher. (2) To discover the meaning of the bullying issues that found in Thirteen Reasons Why Novel by Asher. This research uses qualitative method with content analysis design. It refers to the method of revealing the problems by collecting, classifying and interpreting the data of the research. The data is collected by classifying the bullying utterance. The source of data is a novel entitled Thirteen Reasons Why that published by Razorbil which has 17 chapter in 184 pages. These data of this research focus on the bullying utterance from the main character, Hannah Baker and Clay Jensen, which the researcher analysis using CDA by Fairclough theory and intrinsic element by Nurgiyantoro theory. To see the dominance, the researcher uses percentage to draw the types and level of bullying. To get the trustworthiness of data, the researcher uses theoretical triangulation and proof reader. The results of the research are as follows. First, the researcher found 20 bullying utterance from this novel. The types of bullying including Homophobic, Racist, Beat, Verbal abuse, Gestural abuse, Physical mean, Relational bullying, Sexual harassment, and Cyber bullying obtains 41 times and the level of bullying including one, two, three obtains 20 times. The sexual harassment (22%) is the most dominance from all of the type because it is something fairly to do and taboo to talk about with other. Then, the dominance level goes to the level one because many people don’t realize that they bully someone. Second, the meaning from this research is Hannah Baker has more power and high position than other for making them convey about what they did. The bullying act is done by someone who wants to shows their power, shows “unlike” feeling, jealous and etc. So, not only the bullied who will get the traumatic but the bullies have mental illness too and the setting can comes in real or fiction.
