Advisor : Muntaha, M.Pd Key words : Error analysis, Lexical Error, Writing The objectives of this research were to find out lexical errors in students’ writing of eighth grade at MTs N 1 Karanganyar and to find out the causes of lexical error in students’ writing of eighth grade at MTs N 1 Karanganyar. The subjects of this research were 38 studentsof eighth grade at MTs N 1 Karanganyar.The technique of collecting the data used in this research was a written test. The researcher used Llach’s classification to classify the types of lexical errors. In this research, the researcher used the procedures suggested by Corder (1974), the procedures for conducting error analysis basically consisted of three major stages: recognition, description and Explaining the errors. The researcher used triangulation by using the investigator to get the validity of the data. In this research, the reseacher found 5 types of lexical errors. Those were borrowing, calque, misspelling, misselection and semantic confusion. The frequency of calque was 72.58 %. It was followed by misspelling type (15.05 %), the semantic confusion (8.60 %), the borrowing (3.23 %), and the misselection (0.54 %). From all of types of lexical error, the most frequent type of lexical error was calque. There were 2 kinds of causes of lexical errors. Interlingual was the most frequent cause of lexical error, because the total number of interlingual was 75.81 % of the total number of causes of lexical error. The intralingual was 24.19 % of of the total number of causes of lexical error. It meant that the most frequent of causes of lexical error was interlingual transfer.
