State Islamic Institute Surakarta. Advisor: Dr. H. Sujito, M. Pd Keyword: Problem Based Learning, Writing Skills. Writing is an important skill for language production. However, it is considered a difficult skill, particularly in English as a second language (ESL) context where students face many challenges in writing. Moreover the eighth grade students of SMP N 2 Salam, Magelang also faced some problems in learning writing. When the researcher conducted preliminary research, she found some problems that were faced. First problem was the students were difficult in composing the words in English into sentences, such as many errors in vocabulary, grammar and spelling. The second problem was the way of the teacher in teaching writing is monotonous and applied old method which made the students felt bored with it. In this case, the researcher proposed the method of problem based learning to teach writing. The purpose of this research is to find out how Problem Based Learning Method improves writing skills of the students of SMP N 2 Salam, Magelang, and to find out the responses of the students on the application of Problem Based Learning Method in teaching writing. Research method applied in this research is collaborative classroom action research with the setting of this study is at SMP N 2 Salam, Magelang and the subjects of this research are the students of the eighth year of SMP N 2 Salam in the academic year of 2017/ 2018. Meanwhile, the research instruments are observation sheet, list of students’ names, interview sheet, and test. The result of data analysis shows that the writing skills of the students improve after being taught by Problem Based Learning Method. The students were more imaginative and feel free to express their idea into written text. It made them motivated to learn and they could improve their writing skills through group discussion in the Problem Based Learning. the student’s score of writing achieved taught by problem based learning method taken from their mean (79,37) were higher than those their mean (52,37) were taught without implementing of problem based learning method. The students score obtained in the first cycle could not achieve the minimum standard and the student’s score of cycle 2 could achieve the minimum standard. It can be concluded that there was an improvement in writing skills of the students of SMP N 2 Salam, Magelang. The result of interview shows that most of the students are quite interested in implementation of Problem Based Learning Method. Those mean that Problem Based Learning Method could solve the students’ problem in writing skills of the students of SMP N 2 Salam, Magelang. Therefore, teacher must emphasize the uses of Problem Based Learning to keep students’ interest in writing skill not only for recount text but also various texts.
