Abstract

Alfadhila Dakwatul Istiqomah, 2018. Students’ Learning Autonomy in English Lesson at the Eleventh Grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Karanganyar in the Academic Year 2017/2018.Thesis.English Education Department, Islamic Education and Teacher Training Faculty. Advisor : Zainal Arifin, S,Pd., M.Pd. Key words : Learning Autonomy, English Lesson The objective of this study is to describe the students’ learning autonomy in English lesson. In this research, the researcher also intended to explore the supporting factors in developing students’ learning autonomy in English Lesson. In this research, the researcher used qualitative descriptive research. This research was carried out in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Karanganyar on April 2018. The subject of this research was the eleventh grade students of class XI ICT in the 2017/2018 Academic Year. The techniques of collecting data in this research were passive participant observation, interview and document analysis. The researcher conducted the observation in English teaching learning process for four times. The researcher also held the interview with one teacher and ten students of XI ICT class and documentation to support the data. The trustworthiness of the data, the researcher used data triangulation and method triangulation. In analyzing the data, the researcher used interactive model analysis, included reducing the data, presenting the data, and drawing conclusion or verification of the data.The researcher used Chan’s theory for analyzing students’ learning autonomy and Benson’s theory for analyzing the factors that support autonomous learning in XI ICT class of SMA Muhammdiyah 1 Karanganyar. The results of the research showed that the students’ learning autonomy in English Lesson at eleventh grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Karanganyar was categorized into good in their autonomy and there are factors supporting the auotomous learning. Some characteristics of good autonomous learner were shown by the students in the English learning process both in the classroom and out of classroom. The students were highly motivated in learning English. They also had great enthusiasm and activeness in English learning process. The great enthusiasm and activeness guided them to reach another characteristics of autonomous learner such as willing to ask question about their difficulties in learning process, highly motivated in joining English learning, goal oriented, initiative learning, and making use of the opportunities to develop their learning. The process of autonomous learning in XI ICT of SMA Muhammdiyah 1 Karanganyar was supported by some factors included resource based approaches, technology based approaches, classroom based approaches, teacher based approaches and learner based approaches.
