Abstract

This study was aimed to desribe the teaching learning process of English in English Department of Balai Latihan Kerja Surakarta which English is used in workplace or English for Occupational Purpose. It is conducted to describe the learning objective, the material, the teaching methodology, the classroom procedure, the media, the role of teacher and learners, the problem faced by the learners and the solution for the learners‘ problem. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research design. The subject were the English department teacher and students of BLK Surakarta. The students were the third session of BLK training in the year of 2017. The main instrument of this research was the researcher, who was supported by some instruments, i.e: observation form, interview guide, and documentation. The findings were classified into seven categories. They were learning objective, the material, the teaching methodology, the classroom procedure, the media, the role of teacher and and learners, the problem faced by the learners and the solution of their problem. From the findings, the researcher found that the learning objective is to be a frontliner. The syllabus used by the teacher was in form of module and the material used were not only from the module but the teacher also varied from the additional material. The teacher implemented Role Play in every meeting. The classroom activities were the material overview, discussion, and practice. The media used by the teacher were telephone, LCD, and laptop. The teacher, in BLK called instructor had some roles; as teacher, as a material provide, as a researcher, and as an evaluator while the role of students was a negotiator between their selves and the learning process. During learning English for frontline in BLK Surakarta, the students faced three problems they were pronunciation difficulties, word choosing and usage difficulties, and grammar problem. Based on the findings, some suggestion were given to increase the success of students and the institution of BLK Surakarta.
