Abstract

The objectives of this research was to find out whether Teams Games Tournaments (TGT) technique was effective to use in teaching reading comprehension than using Lecture-discussion at the eighth-grade of MTs N 3 Boyolali in academic year 2017/2018. This research design used quasi-experimental research. The research was conducted in MTs N 3 Boyolali. The population of this research was 10 classes that the average amount at the eight-grade in the second semester was 300 students. Two classes were choosen as the sample of the research. There were VIII I as the experimental class who had been taught by using Teams Games Tournaments and VIII H as the control class who was taught by using Lecture-discussion. In which each class has 4 meetings with the same topic was holiday. This research used cluster random sampling technique. Moreover, the technique of collecting data used a reading comprehension test especially for recount text. The test was multiple choise consists of 30 items for pre-test and post-test with the topic was holiday. It was conducted before and after giving the treatment. To analyze the data, the researcher applied normality test from Lilliefors formula, omogeneity from F table, and independent sample t-test for hypothesis test. The result in this research, the average of students‟ scoore of experimental class using Teams Games Tournaments (TGT) was 73.07 and for students‟ control class using ecture-discussion was 64.21. From the result of independent t-test showed that to higher than ttable (4.514 > 2.005). Based on the result above, it can be concluded that the students who were taught by using Team Game Tournament have better reading comprehension than students who had been taught by using Lecture-discussion. Therefore, teaching reading comprehension for eighth-rade of MTs N 3 Boyolali in academic year 2017/2018 by using Team Game Tournament technique is effective.
