Abstract

Mutiara Sholikah. 2017. An Analysis on the Students’ Current Issue in Writing Course at The Second Semester Student of English Education in The State Islamic Institute of Surakarta in Academic Year 2016/2017. Thesis. English Education Departement, Islamic Education and Teacher Training Faculty, The State Islamic Institute of Surakarta. Advisor : Novianni Anggraini S.Pd, M.Pd. Key Words : Argumentative Writing, Current Issue, Topic, Reason. Writing is one of main skill that should be achieved by the students. Argumentative Writing is one of course of 2nd semester students of English Education in IAIN Surakarta. Knowing the topic and current issue from the students is important since it is Argumentative text. Therefore, the aim of this research were (1) to find out topic that used most or current issue by the 2nd semester students of English Education at IAIN Surakarta in Academic Year 2016/2017 and (2) to find out the reasons of choosing topic/issue by the 2nd semester students of IAIN Surakarta in Academic Year 2016/2017. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research. The subject were the 2nd semester of Argumentative writing course from C-G class. The researcher collected the data from document and interview. The researcher analyzed the data by Miles and Huberman, first is data reduction, second is data display and third is drawing conclusion about the data. Then the researcher indetified and classified the topic from the students worksheet, also identified the reason of choosing the topic. The researcher presented those data in table, pie chart, and percentage. The researcher used methodological tringulation to crosschecks the data. The result finding showed that the students used various topics from the students’ worksheet and also the reason of choosing topic. They were the result about students’ topic: Marriage (8%), Education (32%), Technology (12%), Health (4%), Regulation (20%), Law (4%), Economic (4%), Transportation (4%) and Social Problem (4%). Meanwhile the result of the reason of student chose the topic were: (1) based on own experience, (2) others experience, (3) around phenomena, (4) something debatable, (5) interesting to discuss, and (6) also specific reason that relates with the title. The students have made good enough topic and have their own reason why they chose those topic. Finally, it is suggested to the students to make better title, looking for something more up to date and different from the others.
