Abstract

The aims of this research are: to explore the implementation of teaching of speaking skill in muhawaroh program between male and female of the eight-grade students at Al MukminNgruki boarding school, to explore the strengths and the weaknesses on teaching of speaking skill in muhawaroh program between male and female of the eight-grade students at Al MukminNgruki boarding school. The researcher used descriptive qualitative study to conduct this research by observation, interview, and documentation to gather the data from the implementation of teaching of speaking skill, the strengths and the weaknesses on teaching of speaking skill in muhawaroh program between male and female of eight-grade students. This research used technique of triangulation to develop the trustworthiness of data by Sugiono (2015), the researcher used observation technique then make sure and strength with the other technique such as interview and documentation to validity the data. This research was conducted from January until August 2018. The subjects of this research are 10 of tutors and 40 of students. The results of the research showed that the implementation on teaching of speaking skill in muhawarohprogram that viewed from: The techniques that are applied by the tutor in male boarding school are discussion and role-play, meanwhile in female boarding school the tutor used dictation and memorizing techniques. The methods that are applied by the tutor between male and female boarding school are almost the same, there are direct method and communicative language teaching. The material of muhawaroh program in male studentsrefers to the problems that occur on them, such as: activities at home, hobbies, criticize a problem that is going on, etc. Meanwhile in female students refers to the problems that occur on them, such as: activities on Friday, honesty, things prohibited or allowed, etc. Besides, the materials is given by the tutor are different between junior and senior students. In evaluation of teaching speaking in muhawarohprogram, in male boarding school the tutors used the oral examination meanwhile in female boarding school the tutor used the oral and written examination in every last meeting. The researcher also found the strengths and the weaknesses in the implementation on teaching of speaking skill in muhawarohprogram. The strengths are: 1) muhawaroh makes the students more confident to speak in the public. 2)make the students are more aware and understand about English language such as the pronunciation, vocabularies, grammar, fluently. 3)there is no homework in teaching of speaking. 4) the material was presented in interesting way and have variation. 5)males like abstract reasoning, meanwhile female like concretes reasoning. 6)males need to move around meanwhile female do not need it as much while learning. Then the weaknesses are: 1) the time of muhawarohin the late evening it makes some students felt sleepy. 2)the students cannot speak English instantly, so needed preparation step by step. 3)the methodof memorizing in female boarding school is hard enough for some students.
