Abstract

ABSTRACT Gading Saraswati. 2017. A Content Analysis of Reading Materials on “Contextual English” Textbook for The Tenth Grade of Senior High School. Thesis. Surakarta. English Education Department, Islamic Education and Teacher Training Faculty. The State Islamic Institute of Surakarta. Advisor : Hj. Fithriyah Nurul Hidayati, M.Pd Keywords : Content Analysis, Reading Material, Contextual English Texbook, Lexical Densiti, and Readability This research primarily aims at giving description about “Contextual English” textbook for the tenth grade of Senior High School. The objective of the research are (1) To find out the lexical density of reading text in Contextual English textbook for 10th grade of Senior High School. (2) To find out the readability of reading text in Contextual English textbook for 10th grade of Senior High School. The researcher used qualitative research design to achieve the objectives. This is a documentary analysis which often refers to content analysis. In collecting the data, researcher used document. The researcher used the document to analyze kinds of genres, to analyze the lexical density and to analyze readability on “Contextual English” for the tenth grade of Senior High School. The result of the research are (1) there are six kinds of genre reading text in activity, they are report, descriptive, recount, letter, announcement and news item. (2) there are 24 kinds of reading texts, it can be divided into the criteria of lexical density, there are 11 texts in high lexical density, 12 texts in quite lexical density, and 1 text in low lexical density. It shows that the proportion of words in Contextual English textbook is dominated by quite lexical density. (3) there are 13 texts that has independent readability, and 11 texts that has instructional readability. It means that 78,17% of the readability developed belongs to independent level.
