Abstract

Advisor : Fithriyah Nurul Hidayati, M.Pd Keywords : classroom interaction, teacher talk, student talk The objectives of this research are (1) to describe how the classroom interaction at eighth grade students of SMP Al Islam Kartasura, (2) to know the aspects of classroom interaction at eighth grade students of SMP Al Islam Kartasura, (3) to know the patterns of classroom interaction during teaching-learning process at eighth grade students of SMP Al Islam Kartasura. The research was descriptive qualitative research. The source data in this study were in the form of information about the classroom interaction that produces by the teacher and the students during the teaching-learning process in the classroom. The subjects of this study was the teacher and the students in 8C class. the data collected through two techniques, they are: doing observation and interview. The data analysis method was done by using technique of applying the procedures by Miles and Huberman, there are three events of this technique, and they are: data reducing, data display, and drawing conclusion. The result of the research are (1) the researcher found two kinds of communication between the teacher and the students in the classroom, they are: one-way communication, and restrictive two-way communication. (2) The researcher also found 17 categories of teacher talk and student talk. The 11 categories of teacher talk, they are: deals with feelings, praises and encourage, jokes, uses ideas of students, repeats student response verbatim, ask question, give information, correct without rejection, give direction, criticizes student behavior, and criticize student response. While, the 6 categories of student talk, they are: student response-specific, student response, open-ended or student-initiated, silence, confusion, work-oriented, confusion, non-work-oriented, and nonverbal. (3) Then, the researcher also found the pattern of classroom interaction during teaching-learning process, they are: interaction group work, closed-ended teacher questioning (IRF), individual work, collaboration, and teacher talk.
