Abstract

IAIN Surakarta Advisor : Dr. YustiArini, M.Pd Keywords : Speaking, Media, Whatsapp Messenger, Youtube Videos According to Browne (2001:191), oral communication is vital in order to share ideas, to listen and to learn from others. In the other hand, the mentees got some problems in Bilingual Mentoring Program. They havedifficulties in making a sentence, understanding the materials or doing some exercises in speaking. While Harmer (2001:134) states that media or teaching aid is used by language teachers to explain language meaning and construction, engage students in topic, or as the basis of a whole activity. Thus, the researcher try to use media to know whether Whatsapp Messengereffective to teach speakingin Bilingual Mentoring in IAIN Surakarta. The researcher conductedhis research starting from 5th September 2016 until 2rd July 2017. This research used quasi experimental design (post-test only control group design). The samples of this research aresixth semester of students in IAIN Surakarta (academic year 2016/2017), divided into 3 groups as experimental group that contain 36 subjects and 3 groups as control group that contain 37 subjects with total subject are 73 subjects. This research usedcluster random sampling to collect the sample at sixth semester. The subjects of experimental groups were taught by using Whatsapp Messengerwhile the subjects ofcontrol groups were taught by using Youtube videos. The score of the speaking ability were scored by using Nunan’s table. The data was analyzed by using Mann￾Whitney U (Independence test). The mean score of experimental group is 68.6 while the mean score of control group is 60.7. The result of Mann-Whitney U test computation is significant, because the Asymp Sig (2-tailed) score is 0, lower than 95% of the confidence interval that is 0.05. Therefore, the alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted while the null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Based on the result above, the research findings is there is significant difference between students taught by Whatsapp Messenger and those taught by Youtube videos. It means that Whatsapp Messenger is effective to teach speakingin Bilingual Mentoring GroupsofIAIN Surakarta (academic year 2016/2017).
