Abstract

ABSTRACT Widya Ayu Noviani. 2017. A Correlation Study between Emotional Intelligence, Vocabulary Mastery and The Students’ Achievement in Learning English of The Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Al Muayyad Surakarta in the Academic Year of 2016/2017. Key words : Emotional Intelligence, Vocabulary Mastery, The Students’ Achievement This study is aimed to determine the correlation between: (1) emotional intelligence and the students’ achievement (2) vocabulary mastery and the students’ achievement (3) emotional intelligence, vocabulary mastery and the students’ achievement. This study was carried out in January up to February at SMA Al Muayyad Surakarta. The method used in this study was correlation method. The population was all of the eleventh grade students of SMA Al Muayyad Surakarta in the academic year of 2016/2017 which consists of three classes. The total number of the students was 78 students. The sample was 50 students taken by cluster random sampling technique. The instruments in collecting the data were questionnaire, tests and document. The questionnaire was used to collect the data of emotional intelligence, the tests were used to collect the data of vocabulary mastery. Meanwhile, document is the students’ score of first semester to collect the data of the students’ achievement. In analyzing the data, the researcher used simple and Multiple Linear Regression. The result of the study shows that there is a positive correlation between emotional intelligence and the students’ achievement in learning english because the coefficient of correlation r-obtained is higher than r-table = 0,502 > 0,273. There is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and the students’ achievement in learning english because the coefficient of correlation r-obtained is higher than r-table = 0,612 > 0,273. There is a positive correlation between emotional intelligence, vocabulary mastery and the students’ achievement because the coefficient of correlation r-obtained is higher than r-table = 0,754 > 0,273. Regarding the result of the research, it can be concluded that emotional intelligence, vocabulary mastery and the students’ achievement have a positive correlation. Therefore, emotional intelligence and vocabulary mastery have a contribution to increase the students’ achievement in learning english.
