Abstract

The objectives of the research were to describe the implementation of Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) in teaching writing skill at the seventh grade students of SMP Al-Muayyad Surakarta in the academic year 2016/2017 and to find out the improvement of students’ writing skill after using Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) at the seventh grade students of SMP Al-Muayyad Surakarta in the academic year 2016/2017. The research subject was the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Al-Muayyad Surakarta in the Academic Year 2016/2017. The research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research was conducted in SMP Al-Muayyad Surakarta, which is located at Jl. K.H Samanhudi No. 64 Mangkuyudan, Surakarta, Central Java. Subject of the research refer to the seventh grade students of SMP Al-Muayyad Surakarta in the academic year 2016/2017. The data was collected by using test, observation and interview. The techniques of analyzing the data were qualitative descriptive analysis and quantitative descriptive analysis. The researcher used trustworthiness of test by using test validity and item facility to analyze the exam test items. The result of the research showed that Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) could interact students in teaching writing at the seventh grade students of SMP Al-Muayyad Surakarta in the academic year 2016/2017. The students more paid attention, enjoyed and active participating during the teaching learning process. The result of students’ writing skill improvement was supported by result of test score. The mean score of every test in each cycle showed the improvement score of the students. The mean result of the students writing score was 6.9, improved into 7.9 in Post Test 1 and improved into 8.8 in Post Test 2. From the observation, the researcher founded that the students showed their improvement after the implementation of Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) technique. Most of students have had full concentration to the lesson and to the teacher’s explanation, they change active than before, they have more attention to the teacher’s instruction and they wanted to ask the problems in understanding material, grammar, vocabulary and comprehension.
