Abstract

Advisor : Zainal Arifin, S.Pd., M.Pd Key Words : Teaching, Listening Skill The objectives of the research are to find out the teaching listening elements in the seventh grade students of SMP Al Muayyad Surakarta in the academic year of 2016/2017 and to find out the teaching listening procedures in the seventh grade students of SMP Al Muayyad Surakarta in the academic year of 2016/2017. The research is a descriptive qualitative research. The research is conducted in SMP Al Muayyad Surakarta, which is located at Jl. KH. Samanhudi no. 64, 57142, Purwosari Laweyan Surakarta Jawa Tengah. The research subjects were the English teacher and the seventh grade students of SMP Al Muayyad Surakarta in the academic year of 2016/2017. The data is collected by using observation, interview and documentation. The techniques of analyzing the data are data collecting, reducing of the data, presenting of the data and drawing the conclusion. In this research the researcher uses the triangulation by using resources. The result of this research shows that: 1) the elements of teaching listening at the seventh grade students of SMP Al Muayyad Surakarta in the academic year of 2016/2017 were: (a) the teacher was being facilitator, motivator, controller, and source of informations; (b) the learner role was they could show their understanding about the material and give feedback; (c) the goal of the teaching listening was the subject could understand standard competency, main materials, and evaluated the material; (d) the teacher applied Audio-Lingual method combined with Filling Gaps Technique in teaching listening; (e) the material in teaching listening was about Introduction, Giving and Asking Opinion, and Asking and Giving Apologize, then combined using tape recorder about material taught; (f) the teacher used tape recorder, CD, or DVD as the media in teaching listening; (g) and the teacher did not only evaluate the students’ learning through periodic tests but also the students’ daily performance. 2) The teaching listening procedures in the seventh grade students of SMP Al Muayyad Surakarta in the academic year of 2016/2017 were opening, ice breaking, main activity, consulting, reviewing lesson and closing.
