Abstract

ABSTRACT Narko Wahyu Wahono. 2018. An Analysis of Students’ Speech Anxiety in Public Speaking Subject at the Second Semester of English Education Department IAIN SURAKARTA. Thesis, English Education Department, Islamic Education and Teacher Training Faculty. Advisor : Dr. Rochmat Budi Santoso, S.Pd., M.Pd. The Key Words : Anxiety, Speech, Speech Anxiety The objectives of this research were to know the kinds of students’ speech anxiety, the causes of students’ speech anxiety occur and the ways students reduce or overcome speech anxiety in the pubic speaking subject at the second semester of English Education Department IAIN Surakarta. The researcher used the descriptive qualitative research. It is part of qualitative research. The researcher takes some data from observation, interview, questionnaire and document analysis. The researcher considers the event, informant and document as the source of the research. In drawing conclusion, the researcher analyzes the research findings with the Bippus & Dally theories. To avoid the bias of data, the researcher used the method triangulation. The results of the research showed as follow : (1) There are six kinds of speech anxiety encountered by students in the public speaking subject, they are humiliation, physical appearance, rigid rules, audience interest, mistakes and negative result. The most kinds of students' speech anxiety come from mistakes and humiliation. Students are afraid of making mistakes and feel their mistakes will be noticed by everyone are the kinds of students' speech anxiety most dominant encountered by the students. (2) The causes of speech anxiety encountered by students of the second semester are preparation, personality traits, and unfamiliar role. The most causes of students’ speech anxiety come from preparation. students have not had enough practice is the cause of students’ speech anxiety most dominant encountered by the students. (3) The ways students do to reduce or overcome speech anxiety in the public speaking subject are preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer seeking, and resignation. The most way used by students in the second semester to reduce or overcome their anxiety is by preparation. Finally, the researcher has a suggestion to the lecturer and students. The lecturer could build a friendly situation in a class and create a relax situation to the students to make a good interaction among all of member of the class. Motivation from the lecturer also needed to make students more active and bravely and also confident to learn the material. For the students, the best way to reduce or overcome anxiety during speaking in front of the classroom is students should be believed in themselves. Students can decrease their anxieties through practice and prepare the material well before perform. With this, students will know their own weaknesses and strengths.
