Abstract

English Education Department, Islamic Education and Teacher Training Faculty. Advisor :Dr. Yusti Arini, M.Pd. Keywords : Self-Motivated Learning, Speaking For Formal Interaction, Correlation Design. The objective of this research was to find out the correlation between Students’ Self-MotivatedLearning and Speaking for Formal Interactionat the SecondSemester of EnglishEducationDepartmentofIAINSurakarta. The subjects of this research were 55 studentsof second semester students of English Education Department in the Speaking for Formal Interaction subject. The methods of collecting the data used in this research were scale, documentation and recorded test from lecturer.The researcher useddocumentation andrecorded test from speaking lecturer to find out students’ speaking skill. The topics of speakingfor formal interaction subject were speech, master of ceremony, moderator, speaking to do marketing and advertising video. The sampling of this research was cluster random sampling. The researcher used Ur in creating the items of the instrument. In this research, the scale was made based onthe characteristics of Self-Motivated Students suggested by Ur (1996:275), there were seven characteristics of Self-Motivated Students, those were a positive task orientation, ego-involvement, need for achievement, high aspirations, goal orientation, perseverance, and tolerance of ambiguity. Speaking skill from students were assessed by the score and recorded test from lecturer. Then both of variable X and Y were calculated by Pearson Product Moment through SPSS version 16.In this research, the reseacher found there was a positive and significant correlation between students’ self-motivated learning and their speaking skill. according to the result of the research, it was found that rxy=0.416 with the significant rate 0.01 (p < 0.01). The contribution of Self-Motivated Learning in influencing learners’ speaking skill in Speaking for Formal Interaction subject was 17.3% meanwhile there are still 83.7% factors which can influence students’ speaking skill. By the result above, it means that there is a positive and significant correlation between students’self-motivated learning and their speaking skill at the second semester of English Education Department in IAIN Surakarta. The result of categorization showing that students’ self-motivated learning toward speaking skill categorized very high by the score 129.76. By this result, it means that students’ self-motivated learning is correlated with student’s speaking skill.
