Abstract

Al-Ghazali (1058-1111 AD) is one of the most famous Islamic figures who has produced many works. One of his works, Ihyâ `Ulûmiddîn, al-Ghazali forbade teachers to receive compensation. Even though in reality, he was once a teacher and even an official at the Madrasah Nidzamiyah who must have received compensation. Therefore, this study aims to: (1) understand the conception of teacher compensation according to al-Ghazali; (2) determine al-Ghazali's conception of teacher compensation management; and (3) determine the relevance of compensation management conceptions according to al-Ghazali in the contemporary era. This research used library research. Source of data of this research was the book Ihyâ `Ulûmddîn. Method of collecting data used documentation of works divided into primary data and secondary data. Data analysis techniques in this study used text interpretation methods and historical analysis. The results show that: (1) the conception of teacher compensation according to al-Ghazali is all gifts from Allah SWT to human as a pleasure for his efforts in the world, both those that could be felt directly (e.g. wages, intensive, insurance), and those that could not perceived directly by the recipient, such as praise from humans and Allah SWT, the provision of various facilities and allowances and rewards (rewards) which will be given in the hereafter. According to al-Ghazali, teachers can still receive compensation but they should be able to manage it properly and correctly in accordance with the values of ethics and principles of Islam; (2) Teacher compensation management according to al- Ghazali has a function for justice and social welfare, namely through planned teacher compensation management (planning), organized (organizing), actuating and controlling; (3) Whereas the relevance of the concept of teacher compensation management according to al-Ghazali in the contemporary era is seen in terms of the compensation function, which in al-Ghazali's view as social welfare in the utility hierarchy of individual and social.
