ABSTRACT Mita Wahyuni. 2018. CORRELATION STUDY BETWEEN STUDENTS’ SELFCONFIDENCE AND THEIR SPEAKING ACHIEVEMENT AT THE SECOND GRADE OF SMP AL-ISLAM SURAKARTA IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2017/2018 ”. Advisor : Budiasih S.Pd, M.Hum Keywords : Correlation Study, Self-Confidence, Speaking Acheivement The purpose of this research are to know the correlation between students selfconfidence and their speaking achievement at the eighth grade of SMP Al-Islam Surakarta in academic year 2017/2018. The objective of this research is to find out whether is a positive correlation between students self-confidence and their speaking achievement. This research is correlational study. There are two variables in this research, self-confidence as independent variables (X) and speaking achievement as dependent variable (Y). The research was carried out at SMP Al-Islam Surakarta. The population of the study was the second grade students of SMP Al-Islam Surakarta. The sample of this study is 46 students. The sampling technique used is simple random sampling. The reseacher used questionnare to obtain the data of students self-confidence level and test to obtain the data of students’ speaking achievement. To correlate these variables the reseacher used Product Moment formula to know the coefficient correlation between students’ self-confidence and their speaking achievement. From the calculation, it is obtained the coefficient correlation (robtained) is 0.544. Thenit is compared with the rtable for N 46 at significant correlation 5%:0.291. It means ro is higher than rt (0.544>0.291). So, alternative hypothesis is accepted and null hypothesis is rejected. The conclusion of this research is there is correlation between students self-confidence and speaking achievement in the second grade of SMP Al-Islam Surakarta.
