Abstract

English Education Department, Islamic Education and Teacher Training Faculty. Advisor : Dr. Yusti Arini, M.Pd Key Words : Four Square Writing Method, Description Text Four Square Writing Method is an organizational tool to help students to write clear, organize paragraph and essays, so the students will be able to write systematically. The objective of this research is to find out the implementation of Four Square Writing Method in teaching writing at the EighthGrade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Al-Kautsar in academic year 2017/2018. This research used an Experimental Research design. The research was carried out at SMP Muhammadiyah Al-Kautsar in March 2018. Here, the researcher took the data from the second semester students VIII Buya Hamka and VIII A.R Fahrudin as the sample of research. In this research, VIII Buya Hamka as experimental class and VIII A.R Fachrudin as control class. Total sample are 62 students. The researcher used test to collect the data of the research. The researcher analyzed of the data by using T-test formula. The results of the research lead to the conclusion first, the students who were taught by using Four Square Writing Method have significant different in their writing ability than who are taught by using Guided Writing. It can be proved from the score result of Tobserved is (3.255) which is higher than Ttable (2000) and the significant of Pvalue in Ttest is 0.002 which is lower than significant level 0.05. Themean of the students who are taught by using Four Square Writing Method (76.26) is higher than students who are taught by using Guided Writing (70.84). It means that students taught by using Four Square Writing Method have better writing ability on descriptive text than students taught using Guided Writing and can be concluded that FSWM is effective to teach writing.
