ABSTRACT Ika Istiana Dewi. 2017. “A STUDY ON TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION OF NARRATIVE TEXT AT THE EIGHTH GRADE OF MTS NEGERI SURAKARTA II IN 2016/2017 ACADEMIC YEAR”. Thesis. Surakarta. English Eduation, Islamic Education and Teacher Training Faculty of State Islamic Institute of Surakarta. First Advisor : Dr. Imroatus Solikhah, M. Pd. Second Advisor : Novianni Anggraini, S.Pd., M.Pd. The Key words : Reading,Teaching, Narrative Text, Audiolingual Method (ALM), Grammar Translation Method (GTM), Communicative language Teaching (CLT). The researcher is going to discuss the research problems as follows: What are the methods used by the English teacher in teaching reading of narrative texts at the eighth grade student of MTs Negeri Surakarta II ?, What are the problems faced by the English teacher in teaching reading of narrative texts at the eighth grade student of MTs Negeri Surakarta II?, How does the English teacher solve the problems in teaching reading of narrative texts at the eighth grade student of MTs Negeri Surakarta II?. The objectives of this research are (1) to describe the method used by the teacher in teaching reading narrative text at the eighth grade of MTs Negeri Surakarta II; (2) to describe what the problems faced by the teacher (3) to describe how the teacher does solve problem in implementation teaching reading comprehension of narrative text at the eighth grade of MTs Negeri Surakarta II. This research is a Descriptive qualitative research. The subject of research was the students of class VIII A1 (Program Khusus) of MTs Negeri Surakarta II in 2016/2017 academic year. There were 24 students only female. The researcher collects the data by observing the English class and conducting interview with the teacher. The data include syllabus, reading materials, field notes and interview script. And the methods of collecting the data are observation, interview, and documents. The result of the research from the research finding and discussion, the researcher draws the following conclusion. The first, the methods used by the teacher in teaching reading narrative text at the eighth grade students of MTs Negeri Surakarta II are Audio Lingual Method (ALM), Grammar Translation Method (GTM), and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). The second, the problems faced by the teacher are; (1) the teacher finds difficulties in managing the students in the class, (2) the students have low motivation in teaching-learning English, (3) each student has different capability in receiving the material, and (4) the teacher unfinished of the material in teaching English. The third, the problems solving by the teacher are; (1) the teacher walks around the class in order that the students listen to the explanation seriously, (2) give motivation by creating good relationship between the teacher and students, (3) the teacher should explain the material and gives a chance to the students to ask about the material that they do not understand yet, and (4) the teacher changes the lost time in the past meeting to explain the unfinished material in the next meeting.
