Advisors : Kurniawan, S.S., M.Hum Key words : Sociolinguistics, Gender, Tag Question, Lecturer and IAIN Surakarta This research paper entitled A Sociolinguistic Study of Tag Question Based on Gender Among Lecturers of English Education Department of IAIN Surakarta in Academic Year 2016/ 2017. The purposes of this research are to know the function of tag question based on gender among lecturers of English Education Department of IAIN Surakarta in Academic Year 2016/ 2017, and to know the frequency of tag question that is use based on gender among lecturers of English Education Department of IAIN Surakarta in Academic Year 2016/ 2017. The research method is descriptive qualitative method. The result tends to focus on the deep meaning of the dialogue’s quality rather than the quantity of number. The subjects of this research were the lecturers of writing class and the lecturer of speaking class at the second semester of English Education Department of IAIN Surakarta in Academic Year 2016/ 2017. The data of this research were all utterances used by lecturers containing tag question. The data was classified into the function of tag question based on Holmes classification. There are two kinds the function of tag question, they are modal tags and affective tags. Affective tags divided into two kinds, its as follows : facilitative and softeners. The context of situation was analyzed with the SPEAKING model of Hyme’s. The instrument of this research is the researcher herself who collects, analyzes, and presents the data findings of the research then draws the conclusions. This research applied triangulation technique to support the data credibility. The result of this research is divided into two parts: The first result shows two functions of tag question used by lecturer of English Education Department of IAIN Surakarta. There are modal tags and facilitative tags. The functions of tag question are found 40 data. There are 20 data from modal tags and 20 data from affective tags. The second result shows that male speakers use more modal tags question than female speakers. The finding of this research is different from Holmes’ findings. It is found that male speakers use more modal tags and facilitative tag questions than softeners tag questions in their speech. In contrast, female speakers use more modal tag questions than facilitative tag question in their speech. The result of this research is expected to provide an additional view and information of the functions of tag questions for the students, lecturers, and other researchers who are interested in the field of tag questions study.
