Abstract

ABSTRACT Islamic education is one of the subjects which aims at building the moral of student. Moral is one major foundation in building of human culture. Character education is motived by declining of moral issues. This research aims at knowing : (1) the role of the Islamic education teachers in character building. (2) the efforts are being done in character building of teacher (3) factors that obstruct character building of student. This research used descriptive qualitative approach. This research was conducted at the junior high school of Muhammadiyah 6 Ngawi in academic year 2014/2015. The subjects in this study were teachers of Islamic education and students. The informants in this study were the principal, teacher, staff and students. The data collection techniques used observation, interview and documentation. Data were validated with method and source triangulation. Data analysis techniques used interactive model including the data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and data verification. The results of this research indicate that : (1) Islamic education teacher has an important role in character building of student by implementing its role as mentors, role models, advisors, and evaluators. (2) the efforts that are done by teacher in character building of student by means of : (a) giving the example of the student (b) controlling and mentoring with a religious character to apply value of honest, creative, discipline, responsibility, love of the fatherland, care for the environment, peace loving, hard work and reading interest (c) commiting habit such as praying dhuha and dzuhur in congregation and reading qur'an (d) giving reward and punishment (e) constructing student discipline (f) holding the cooperating with the parent of the student (g) applicating the characteristic curriculum explicitly. The obstacles in this character building of student are (1) the lack of awareness and example from the teacher (2) the passiveness student about the importance of character education (3) environmental factors of the student. The solutions are a). head master consciousness to the teacher and student about the importance of character education value. b). example that is given by the teacher themselves. c). cooperate with the parent in character building of the student.
