Abstract

ABSTRACT Anggarina Nurul Aini 2017. An Experimental study of picture series in teaching Reading of Narrative text at eight Grade students of SMP Ta’mirul Islam Surakarta in academic year 2016/2017. “ Thesis, English Education Departement, Islamic Education and Teacher Training Faculty, The State Islamic Institute of Surakarta. Woro Retnaningsih, M.Pd Key words : Reading, Narrative text, Picture series The objective of this research is to know the Effectiveness of students’ of picture series in to teach reading of narrative text the eight grade of SMP Ta’mirul Surakarta in academic year of 2016/2017. The method used in this study was quantitative research and the research design was quasi experimental study. This study was conducted following procedures of the quasi experimental study. Data collecting teqnique was conducted pre-test and post-test by giving test which consist 20 multiple choise items for each test. The samples come from the population are 44 students coming from two classes consisting of 22 students of VIIIA as the experimental group and 22 students of VIIIB as the control group. The research used cluster rondom sampling in choosing VIIIA class as experimental group and VIIIB class as control group. Instrument in this research used pre-test and post-test. Technique of analyzing data was t-test formula. The result of this study shows that there was significant difference on students reading of narrative text by picture series and whithout picture series. Based on the calculation, it was found that the mean score of the experimental group is 82, 72727 and the mean score of the control group is 71,636. Besides, based on the data analysis of tscore is 5,044 and ttable in the level significant 0,05% is 2,0181. Thus, it means that the use of picture series technique is effective in teaching reading for eight grade students of SMP Ta’mirul Islam Surakarta in academic year 2016/2017.
