Abstract

This research aimed to determine 1) the management of moral education of the students at State Junior High School 2 Ngrambe and 2) the factors affecting the successful management of moral education of the students at State Junior High School 2 Ngrambe although it is a general school (nondenominational). This research employed a qualitative approach. It was conducted at State Junior High School 2 Ngrambe in the academic year of 2015-2016. The research subjects consisted of the principal, teachers, the school committee, students, and parents of the students. As for the research informants, they included the principal, teachers, the school committee, parents, community leaders, and students. The data were collected using the techniques of observation, interview, and documentation methods. The data validity was ensured using the techniques of prolonged engagement, persistent observation and triangulation (methods and sources). The data were analyzed using the interactive model consisting of data collection, data reduction, data display and data verification. The findings suggested that 1) the management of moral education of the students at State Junior High School 2 Ngrambe: a) was undertaken through intracurricular, extracurricular, and habituation activities. The management was implemented in a structured, integrated and normative manner based on Islamic values and by providing role models. b) The principal of State Junior High School 2 Ngrambe has performed the management functions, nemely planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, motivating, controlling, and evaluating. 2) the factors affecting the successful management of moral education of the students at State Junior High School 2 Ngrambe cannot be separated from the creativity of the principal in managing students’ moral education at school. Although it is a general school (nondenominational) and the number of hours of teaching Islamic Education is only two hours of lessons in one week, the moral education of students at State Junior High School 2 Ngrambe succeeded because it implemented the following strategies: a) integrating morals into the vision, mission and objectives of the school, b) integrating the Islamic value based-character education into all the subjects, c) conducting the extracurricular activities by also instilling Islamic values, d) establishing Islamic culture in the school environment by also creating conducive school conditions, and e) flexibility of the principal in establishing partnerships with various parties both internally and externally.
